The National Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Human Trafficking Unit has been investigating a gang of Hungarian members who were running prostitutes in Germany for more than a year, and has managed to arrest the fourth member.
The gang had been operating illegally since 2017, using the method of transporting vulnerable girls recruited in Hungary to Germany, where they were forced into prostitution. The victims in Berlin had to work in certain streets controlled and protected by the perpetrators, under constant surveillance. The girls had to pay between €150 and €250 per day for the use of the street sections, while there were also cases where the remaining money was taken away from them. If they did not meet the required limit, they were not allowed off the street. Victims were constantly subjected to psychological terror and physical abuse.
Two members of the gang were arrested in Berlin in September 2022, in close cooperation with German police, and are currently under a custodial measure. The fourth member of the gang was arrested in Ireland in January 2023.
In addition to those already apprehended, the National Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Human Trafficking Unit has identified new perpetrators in the course of the investigation. One of them is 27-year-old Kristóf L., who is suspected of having lured one of the victims into prostitution on the streets of Berlin for several months in 2020. The man took her earnings in full, out of which he had to pay the leader of the gang, who had been caught earlier, 250 euros a day for using the streets. In addition, he assaulted the victim on several occasions. There are now seven suspects in the case. Four of them are currently under restraint of liberty and the number of victims identified and questioned exceeds 25.
