Human trafficking is a major problem in the European Union and a priority for the law enforcement authorities of the Member States. It is a serious crime and an abuse of the individual’s fundamental rights and dignity. This crime often has a transnational character and due to its nature, it is often hard to discover and investigate.
Europol has published its Situation Report on trafficking in human beings which provides an overview of the situation in the EU from the law enforcement perspective. The key findings are grouped around the following topics: definition and the overall scale of THB in Europe; push & pull factors; criminal networks involved in THB; the exploitation; the EU legal and political commitment; conclusions.
