Evaluation of the “Anti-trafficking tent” at the Sziget Festival 2014

As in the past two years, the Ministry of Interior was presented at the Sziget Festival this summer as well, at the Civil Island as part of an awareness raising campaign in the topic of fight against human trafficking. The visitors could gain information about the phenomenon of human trafficking, the indicators of victimisation and possible solutions, important steps and measures to be taken before going abroad to work and the activities of the organizations taking part in the fight against human trafficking.

This year the Ministry of Interior shared a tent with the national contact point of the European Migration Network, so obtaining information concerning migration and asylum were also part of the program.

Target group:

Visitors of the Sziget Festival who wanted to know more information about the phenomenon, especially people between 18 and 50, secondary grammar school students who are interested and willing to work abroad.

Evaluation:

The prevention and public awareness raising programme was officially launched at 15.00 o’clock on 13 of August with a press conference of Ms Krisztina Berta deputy state secretary and national anti-trafficking coordinator and the representatives of the foreign embassies.

In the framework of the programme 1098 questionnaires on trafficking in human beings have been filled in:

74,37 % (798 visitors) were Hungarian, 25,63% (275 visitors) were foreign nationals. Most of the visitors arrived from the following EU member states to the civil tent:

Besides of the EU Members States most of the visitors came to the tent were Brazilian, Turkish and Australian citizens.

Concerning the age of the visitors it can be established that the age group of 19-25 years is the highest (618 visitors), which is followed by the age group of 26-35 years (246 visitors) and 15-18 years (144 visitors). Significant part of these age groups are interested in working abroad therefore special attention was paid on them.

Gender of the visitors:

Male: 51.29 %

Female: 48.71%

The tent welcomed the visitors from 09.00 – 18.00 o’clock each day and on the busy days the opening hours were extended to 1,5-2 hours. All the colleagues working in the tent were experts in the field of the fight against human trafficking or migration, and had knowledge of foreign languages.

• Questionnaire on trafficking in human beings

• Public awareness conversations with the representatives of the organizations

• Useful presents, gifts, books, brochures

Visitors of the tent could fill in questionnaires on trafficking in human beings (Hungarian and English versions were available) through which they learned about theoretical and practical sites of human trafficking. Among the questions took place the distinction of trafficking in human beings and migrant smuggling, the most frequent recruitment methods, the criminal liability of the recipient of sexual service, and questions relating to working abroad.

In conclusion we can say that the prevention and awareness raising programme was successful. In a cost-effective way under a short period a lot of people were made aware on the phenomenon of human trafficking and were given useful information.
