Hungary upgraded in the 2020 TIP Report

Publicated on: June 30, 2020

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo presented the 20th annual TIP Report on June 25, which –recognizing the past year’s efforts – upgraded Hungary’s ranking.

The annual anti-trafficking report (TIP Report) of the US Department of State was presented on June 25, 2020 during an online event, where Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Advisor Ivanka Trump gave information on the main findings of the report, as well as the US priorities related to human trafficking.

The report concluded that the Government of Hungary is making significant efforts to meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking. The document acknowledged that more trafficking cases were investigated, and traffickers were sentenced to significant prison terms. It highlighted the appointment of specialized trafficking investigators at each of its 19 county headquarters, as well as in the Budapest office, the amendment of the Criminal Code and the law on administrative offences, as well as the adoption of a national strategy for 2020–2023. Accordingly, the government demonstrated overall increasing efforts compared to the previous reporting period; therefore Hungary was upgraded to Tier 2.

The report found, however, that further efforts are needed in the identification and referral of child victims of trafficking, and the identification of third-country national victims.

The full text of the report is available on the US State Department’s website.
