The leader of the human trafficking ring was busted in Hamilton in 2012. Pursuant to the Public Safety Minister of Canada, the members were convicted under the Criminal Code of Canada of one of the most despicable crimes — human trafficking.
The criminal organization promised jobs and an easy life to the victims, brought them from Hungary to Canada and forced them to work against their will, held them in basements and fed them food scraps. Their passports were seized and they were made to apply for refugee status as well as welfare. Their captors threatened violence against their families back home if they left.
The leader of the gang was sentenced to nine years in 2012, he is still in custody. His brother was not deported because he is the only member of the criminal organization with Canadian citizenship.
